This term usually refers to iron and steel making but could equally apply to non-ferrous metals industries and to foundries. “Hot metal” actually means liquid metal which is transferred in many stages of the process such as tapping liquid iron from a blast furnace, transfer of the liquid iron into ladles or torpedo cars. The liquid iron flows down runners, and later is poured into steel making vessels which themselves are tapped or poured for onward processing. Finally the molten metal is transfer into a caster or mold where solidification occurs. At all these transfers metallic fume is released to a greater or lesser extent. Carefully designed hoods will allow the fume to be captured and then be conveyed in ducts to the air pollution control system. Because a significant amount of ambient air is drawn in with the fume the polluted air will be much cooler that primary air extracted from furnaces and so can be used to cool the mixture of polluted air streams to be treated at the air pollution control plant.
