Uncovering Clean Air

Underground rock mining refers to various underground mining techniques used to excavate minerals from rocks. This includes either hard minerals, such as ore containing gold, silver, iron, copper, and lead, or softer minerals, such as salt or coal. Coal is a key source of energy and is a natural resource found all around the world. Approximately 60% of world coal production currently comes from underground mining.

Mining underground comes with its own unique set of challenges. One of the most important aspects of underground mining is ventilation. Ventilation is the primary method of clearing hazardous gases and dust which are created from drilling, blasting activity, and gases that are naturally released from the rock.

An underground mining operator came to AAF® for a solution to reduce the dust being pulled through the main mine ventilation fans. AAF® recommended the RotoClone® N due to its relatively small size compared to a traditional baghouse. Additionally, this wet dust collector has the ability to handle hot, moist gas streams and explosive dusts with no moving parts. The RotoClone® N cleans the air by the combined action of centrifugal force and a thorough intermixing of water and coal dust-laden air.

Challenge

An underground mining operator wanted to reduce the dust being pulled through the main mine ventilation fans. The dust was decreasing the efficiency of the fan. Space limitations were also a concern, since the mine shaft was located underground.

Solution

The RotoClone® N is the best solution to many coal dust collection needs. It combines high efficiency, low maintenance costs, simplicity, low water usage, and flexibility. Due to its relatively small size compared to a traditional baghouse, the RotoClone® N fits limited space applications.

Benefits

After installation of the collector, the customer reported that the wear of the ventilation fans was decreased significantly. With no nozzles to clog, and the impeller fan as the only moving part, the RotoClone® N required minimal maintenance. The water used in the unit captured and eliminated the fugitive dust.
