BioMass Power Station

Power Station Turns Trash into Treasure

Biomass and waste accumulate for approximately two-thirds of the world’s primary renewable production. Biomass, a renewable energy source, includes anything from agricultural residues to forestry waste. For tens of thousands of years, it has been used as fuel and today, methods have been created to convert biomass into heat and electricity. These methods are used for everything from household heating to electricity for commercial power plants.

A biomass-fired power plant produces electricity and heat by burning biomass in a boiler. The most common types of boilers are hot water boilers and steam boilers. Residues, wood chips, natural gas, and other types of biomass are used in the boilers. Water is added to the boiler and heated to high temperatures under pressure, producing steam. The steam powers the turbine, which is connected to the generator.

A biomass power station wanted to reduce the amount of dust expelled from their factory. Their current system contained bags that were difficult to maneuver due to their size and weight. AAF® recommended the RotoClone® W due to its capability of handling hot, moist gas streams and its compact size, which saves on space.

Challenge

The customer’s application is for a process that produces steam and sawdust. Their current system already had a cyclone filter, which wasn’t capturing the dust particulates properly. They wanted the ability for continual operation, while reducing the amount of dust exposure to not only their staff, but surrounding neighbors.

Solution

AAF® installed a RotoClone® W unit after the cyclone to capture the dust carry-over. The unit was mounted on a purpose built platform about 6 1/2 feet (2 meters) from the ground. Water is taken from a tank through a magnetic filter to remove any ferrous particles and then pumped through to the RotoClone® W unit. Unlike pulse-jet filters, the RotoClone® W doesn’t require dust layer to form before building resistance. This allows for immediate efficiency.

Benefits

The customer reported completed satisfaction with the customized solution to their dust control problem. Since the RotoClone® W is able to perform without downtime, they are able to save time and money on maintenance. This continual operation of the unit has also eliminated the dust exposure to workers and neighboring residents.
