High Capacity Nuclear Grade HEPA Filters

The nuclear grade AstroCel® HEPA filters were specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements specified by the U.S. Army. AstroCel filters have greater dust holding capacity and last longer. Thus, they reduce operating and maintenance costs. As a replacement filter, AstroCel filters increase the capacity of existing systems without any additional construction cost.

Design and Construction

The design of the AAF Nuclear Grade High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter follows the requirements of MIL-F-51068, ASME N509, ASME AG-1 Section FC, and is available in a Standard Flow and High Capacity design.

The AstroCel I Standard and High Capacity Nuclear grade HEPA Filters operate on the interception-diffusion principle to remove ultra fine particles from ventilation and process air using a high ratio of media area to face area, limiting air velocity through the media to 5 feet per minute at rated air flow. This low flow per square foot of media provides an extremely high efficiency, high dust holding capacity, and longer life. The high density filtering media of sub-micron glass fibers is folded into a closely pleated pack with pleats evenly spaced by corrugated separators which support the media and allow air to flow through with minimum resistance. The media pack is sealed into the filter cell sides with a polyurethane adhesive. The cell sides have rigid double box flanges (#14 Gauge Stainless Steel) or rabbited and double nailed corners (Fire-Retardant Plywood) for maximum resistance to rough handling and distortion free, clamp sealing.

Neoprene gaskets with interlocking dovetailed corners or a deep channel containing silicone gel are provided on one or both (gasket only) faces for leak free sealing into housings or banks. Faceguards of 4 x 4 galvanized hardware cloth (standard) or Type 304 Stainless steel (optional) on both faces for media protection and added protection from racking are provided. These filters are qualified under UL Standard 586 and are so labeled. Each filter is factory tested at 100% of rated air flow and at 20% of rated air flow (Size 3 and larger) and individually labeled and identified with a unique serial number and test results for penetration and resistance.  The characteristics of the media and the construction of the media pack allow the filter to be installed with air flow in either direction, regardless of the direction tested.
